May 29, 2012 - Pedro Hirata is a fourth-year student visiting the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry at Western University from the University of Sao Paulo, Brazil. His research focuses on ways to slow the progress of Alzheimer's disease. During his five-month study term in Canada at Western's Robarts Research Institute, he will work with Dr. Marco Prado and other scientists, to further his research. In particular, he has expanded his knowledge and experience through the use of behavior modeling in mice.
Brazil recently introduced the $2-billion Science Without Borders Program to send 100,000 students abroad to study science by 2015. The Program is expected to draw an additional 12,000 Brazilian students to Canada over the next four years. More Brazilian Science Without Borders students will join Western in August 2012.
