Robarts Fast Facts

•  Robarts Research Institute was founded in 1986 under the scientific leadership of neurologist Dr. Henry Barnett, along with Dr. Cal Stiller, Dr. Charles Drake, J. Allyn Taylor, Richard Ivey, Walter J. Blackburn and Dr. Ramsay Gunton.

•  Dr. Barnett’s work with aspirin as a preventive therapy for heart attack and stroke remains one of the most important developments in 20th century medicine.

•  Robarts was home to the first fMRI (functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging) facility in Canada and currently houses the country’s highest magnetic field human and animal scanners.

•  Robarts has continued to lead the way in the development, use and application of advanced medical technology.

•  The Institute’s Imaging Laboratories pioneered the use of 3D ultrasound for the prevention and treatment of carotid artery disease, prostate cancer and breast cancer.

•  Our development of “blood perfusion” technology has been incorporated into thousands of CT scanners worldwide, enabling physicians to better assess patients’ receptiveness to clot-busting medications following stroke.

•  Robarts takes a unique, interdisciplinary approach to medical research. Collaborative research groups include: Robarts Clinical Trials, Imaging, Molecular Brain Research and Vascular Biology.

•  Academic and clinical collaboration also exists with Western University's Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry, the hospital sites and family medical centres within London Health Sciences Centre, St. Joseph’s Health Care, London and Lawson Health Research Institute.

•  Our scientists hold more than $40 million in annual research funding.

•  One quarter of Robarts’ Scientists are also physicians, helping put research discoveries more quickly into application through promising new treatment options for patients.

•  Robarts researchers continue to hold prominent academic and public honours including Canada Research Chairs, Orders of Canada and listings among Canada’s “Who’s Who” and “Top 40 Under 40.”

•  Robarts has experienced great commercial success with the establishment of eight spin-off companies and 18 commercial licenses that produce more than $3 million in licensing revenue annually.
