Law firms support concussion research

Seven London law firms have jointly contributed $130,000 to support concussion research at Robarts.

The firms – Beckett Lawyers, Harrison Pensa LLP, Legate & Associates, Lerners LLP, McKenzie Lake Law, Siskinds LLP, and Wallace Smith Lawyers – presented the cheque during a special event earlier this month.

“This gift helps drive a city-wide focus on interdisciplinary concussion research,” said Marlys Koschinsky, PhD, Scientific and Executive Director at Robarts.

At Robarts, researchers are using a three-pronged approach to understanding concussion and possible therapeutic interventions – looking at inflammatory responses, neuroplasticity and forms of dementia linked to chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE).

“Giving to research is such a hope-filled thing to do,” said Robarts scientist and concussion researcher Arthur Brown, PhD. “The research that this donation makes possible will serve as a foundation for a series of questions and studies. The support will reverberate for years to come.”

Nigel Gilby, BA’75, LLB’78, practice leader at Lerners LLP, spoke on behalf of the contributing law firms, noting the personal connection the group of lawyers have with concussion. “We, as personal injury lawyers, see the devastating, life-long effects of concussions on individuals and families,” he said. “This is a local effort that shows what local firms can do together. We all look forward to the progress that will be made in this important area of research.”
