June 18, 2009 - Funding announced from the Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI) included $17.5 million towards four projects at the University of Western Ontario. Among them is Robarts Scientist Terrence Peters, whose study on Image-Guided Minimally Invasive Intervention and Simulation received $2,577,602.
This project brings together the research within the Robarts Imaging Laboratories and the Canadian Surgical Technologies and Advanced Robotics (CSTAR) centre. Its aim is to advance the technologies that will permit surgery to be performed at multiple sites within the body, guided by medical imaging and executed by remotely actuated miniature surgical tools, while accessing the sites from small incisions in the patients skin, or via natural body orifices.
Also receiving funding from the CFIare Robarts Scientists Aaron Fenster,PhD and Dr. David Spence. The project is a collaboration based out of The University of Montreal studying communication and imaging infrastructure for the Canadian Atherosclerosis Imaging Network (CAIN).
Todays announcement from CFI is tremendously good news for Western, for four of our top researchers and for their research teams, says Western President Paul Davenport. Each of them has already made a large impact in their fields, and with this funding, each will be moving forward with important and relevant research. Our thanks go to the federal government and CFI for this generous funding.
The funding of these projects demonstrates the dynamic variety of world-class science and research being done at Western, said Ed Holder, Member of Parliament for London West. This exciting science will save lives, and it will be done right here in London. Western continues its position as a global player which will attract and retain brilliant minds in London.
The CFIs support of cutting-edge research infrastructure has transformed Canadas research landscape and increased the countrys international competitiveness, said Dr. Eliot Phillipson, President and CEO of the CFI. Investments like these have allowed Western to become a destination of choice for some of the worlds top research talent.
The Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI) is an independent corporation created by the Government of Canada to fund research infrastructure. The CFIs mandate is to strengthen the capacity of Canadian universities, colleges, research hospitals, and non-profit research institutions to carry out world-class research and technology development that benefits Canadians.
