DNA Sequencing Workshop, Robarts Research Institute

This workshop was held June 8th 2005, and consisted of presentations by the staff, followed by a tour of the DNA Sequencing and the Microarray Facilities at Robarts Research Institute. I would like to thank Dr. Rob Hegele, the Scientific Director of the DNA Sequencing Facility, and John Robinson, who led the workshop.

Brain Aneurysm Workshop

The brain aneurysm workshop on November 8th 2005 was an interesting mix of presentations by Dr. Stephen Lownie, a neurosurgeon at London Health Sciences Centre; Robarts Scientists, Drs. David Holdsworth and David Steinman; and from the University of Western Ontario, Dr. Peter Canham and doctoral student, Renee Korol. Dr. Canham gave an overview of aneurysms. Dr Lownie talked about the neurosurgeon’s dilemma in understanding the level of risk posed by each brain aneurysm. He presented cases of poor patient outcomes – the kind that tend to change thinking and subsequently clinical practice. Dr. Steinman described the power and pitfalls of mathematical modelling for brain arteries and aneurysm blood flow. Renee Korol described laser scanning fluorescence spectroscopy used as an endovascular approach, and Dr. Holdsworth led a discussion on problems within aneurysm research.

New Biostatistics Workshop - December 2011

A series of 4 biostatistics workshops have been organized for students in the Ttraining Program. The workshops are being taught by Dr. Yves Bureau, a statistician. As well as instruction, the workshops are designed to give students some hands on experience analyzing data sets and are located in one of the computer rooms at Western.

The details of the times and location are:
Duration: 3 hours per session (12 hours in total)
Time: 1:30 PM - 4:30 PM
Location: SSC 1032 (Social Science Centre Computer Lab)
Dates: Dec. 1st, Dec. 2nd, Dec. 8th, and Dec. 9th

Registration is at:

Ultrasound Workshop

This hands on workshop was given by Dr. Tamie Poepping and her students on the evening of November 27th 2008. Students moved between three different stations teaching different aspects of how ultrasound works and got to measure their own carotid arteries and how to calculate the blood flow within them. They also had to measure and identify two mystery objects embedded in cryogel.

Intra-Cardiac Surgery Workshop

This workshop was given on Tuesday, March 7th 2006 in the Auditorium of Canadian Surgical Technologies & Advanced Robotics (C-STAR), by Drs. Gerard Guiraudon, Doug Jones, and Dan Bainbridge. Dr Jones started with a presentation entitled "Cardiac Electrophysiology: the Good, the Bad and the Ugly“, describing the mechanisms of atrial fibrillation.

Dr. Guiraudon, a retired cardiac surgeon, who is active in atrial fibrillation research, went on to describe the team's development of a new tool to facilitate intracardiac surgery, the universal cardiac introducer (UCI). This tool allows the introduction of up to four instruments at one time into the heart. The lower cuff of the UCI forms an air lock, preventing blood loss and air embolism. Dr. Guiraudon showed videos of this tool being used during surgery to replace a valve in the heart of a pig.

Dr. Bainbridge’s presentation showed how tracked transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) was used as the image guidance system to place the valve accurately.

An updated version of this workshop was repeated May 1st 2007 for the new students. Dr. Terry Peters was added to the list of presenters and talked about the development of image-guidance and virtual reality during closed, off-pump, intracardiac surgery on the beating heart. The workshop was videotaped. It can be viewed at:
