Dr.
Aaron Fenster, 2008 recipient of the Hellmuth Prize, The University
of Western Ontario’s highest honour for contributions to
research. The Hellmuth Prize for Achievement in Research recognizes
faculty members with outstanding international reputations for
their contributions in research - one of the defining hallmarks
of a university. Fenster's research is focused in two interdisciplinary
programs combining imaging in vascular imaging, and image-guided
surgery and therapy - together with biomedical engineering.
In vascular imaging, the focus is on developing multi-modality imaging techniques
to provide high-resolution information about blood vessel lumen and arterial
wall/plaque properties.
The research plan involves combining 3D ultrasound imaging techniques invented
and developed by Fenster's team with tools developed by others to provide a comprehensive
carotid artery imaging exam that can better determine the risk of stroke. The
hypothesis is that this new approach will provide increased accuracy for the
identification of carotid artery plaques.
“The Hellmuth Prize recognizes our team's work over the past years in taking
innovations from the concept stage to clinical translation and commercialization," says
Fenster. “The work is a product of many graduate students and staff who
have worked very hard to realize our vision that basic research can have an
impact on health care as well as have an economic impact in Ontario and Canada." |

Dr. Aaron Fenster, who received
a prestigious Premier’s Discovery
Award from Ontario’s Premier and Minister of Research and Innovation,
Dalton McGuinty. The
Premier's Discovery Awards (PDA) celebrate the excellence of Ontario's
finest senior researchers and, by showcasing individual
achievements, aim to enhance Ontario's attractiveness as a global
research centre.
